Until recently we at Northstar Motorsports have only sold the HANS Device Head and Neck Restraint. The reason the HANS was the only device we carried is because we had not seen any other device that we felt comfortable in recommending to our customers. Now this has changed! Schroth, the German racing harness maker, has developed its own version of a Head and Neck Restraint. Their new device is call the Schroth SHR Flex Head and Neck Restraint. While we are still very high on the HANS Devices, the new Schroth device has several features that make it very appealing. The Schroth SHR Flex offer simple sizing – there are just two sizes – a Medium for necks up to 16 ½” and a Large for necks over 16 ½”. And a size Large can even be used if your neck is smaller to give you more room over the collar bones.
The Schroth SHR Flex is angle independent, which means that the small, low collar works perfectly with any seating angle and does not interfere with the seat back. The articulating collar rises in an impact to create the optimum tether angle. So the Schroth SHR Flex is perfect for drivers who drive multiple cars with different seat backrest angles. No longer do you need to buy a head and neck restraint with an angle that is compatible with your seat back angle.
The legs of the Schroth SHR Flex are connected to the collar along with a unique bump stop that smooths out the initial tether loading and allows the proper collar angle in an impact. The legs also have padding molded in, eliminating the need for additional pads. This feature allows the belts to fit tight to the body and keeps the SHR Flex from moving under the belts.
The sliding, twist anchor, floating tether system allows a full range of motion of the head, to the left and right, while also adding some side stability.
The low collar of the Schroth SHR Flex makes it much easier to get in and out of cars with the device on. And the collar of the SHR Flex features extended vertical retention ears at the outside edge to help keep your belts on the Flex, even in a secondary impact.
The Schroth SHR Flex is constructed of high strength Carbon reinforced material so it is exceptionally light weight.
The Schroth SHR Flex is SFI 38.1 certified and includes Flex helmet posts that mount directly to the M6 terminal which are now standard on all Snell SA2015 helmets.
